The winter of 2013-14 was a harsh one
Snow piled up until there wasn’t room for more.
Sixty days of extreme below zero temperatures
Still peole, worldwide, came to our shores.
The ice caves with their rare beauty
Brought over 100,000 visitors to view the
phenomenon
Businesses usually closed for thwe winter
re-opened
Packed restaurants had long lines going on and on.
At times there were five miles of parked cars
And people walking on the highway
Then there is a 1½ mile hike on the ice to reach
the caves
Is it worth it, you say? Most say yes.
Amid the related chaos
There’s bound to be some humor
Probably lots more than I know
I’ll cite two and no more.
This question never thought of by the locals
Was asked by another visitor from afar:
“Do you pull those islands to shore for
the winter?”
The reply: “No, we leave them where they are.”
One plains state visitor asked a waitress,
As he looked at snow covered Chequamegon Bay:
“What do you raise in those fields in the summer?”
“Fish”, was the reply without a snicker.
Now the ice is unsafe,so the caves are closed
Who knows if this will happen again, to this extent
Only Mother Nature knows, and she ain’t talking
But this was an exciting, unusual winter event.
