Where Did I Go— And Why

white and gray concrete building beside green trees during daytime

Early one morning I’d gone back to bed after letting the dog outside. I was in a dream- like state. I was in a strange area where there was nothing familiar. There were strange names on the street signs; that I had never heard of.

Several nights later, I was on my way from a friends house going to my sons house. It wasn’t snowing right then, but there was a lot of snow on the ground and the streets weren’t very well plowed. Some of the intersections had lots of chewed up loose snow in them.

I had to stop for traffic at ninth avenue and Pine street. This was one of the intersections with a lot of loose snow, so I couldn’t move after the other car passed.. My tires would spin and I would slip sideways. I turned on my emergency flashers in case someone came down the street. A car did come from behind me, went around me on the right, never thinking that I might need help. What ever happened to Good Samaritans???????

I had called my son and I was waiting for him to come. He walked down there with a shovel so he could dig me out. He got into the car and tried to drive it and it moved right away. Evidently the tires had cooled down while I waited for him so they didn’t slide around. When he got the car through the intersection, I got behind the wheel and headed for his home. He watched to see that I got through the next intersection without a problem; then he walked home, just a couple of blocks.

Instead of turning at the intersection, I don’t know why, I went straight ahead for a few blocks. I realized I didn’t know where I was. How did this happen? Nothing looked familiar. I’ve driven around this town lots of time and didn’t think it was possible to get lost, because it is a very small town. The street signs said Pokey Street and Hokey Avenue. I have never seen or heard of them before.

I turned around so I could re-trace my footsteps. After slipping and slithering through the snow, I got turned around and started back down what I had thought was Pine Street. I crossed Polka, Waltz and Fox Trot Avenues. None were familiar. I stayed on Pokey Street because I knew I hadn’t made any turns, so surely I would come to something familiar.

It wasn’t long until I saw the sign for County C, with which I was familiar. Now I knew where I was, so I turned onto County C and then onto eighth street. It was only a couple of minutes until I arrived at my sons. He said: “Where have you been? We were ready to send a search party to find you.”

I said:”I don’t know where I was or why. This was really weird ,I was at Hokey Avenue and Pokey Street—and I didn’t even do the hokey pokey!”

I’ve no idea why I went on this little excursion or where these streets and avenues are located.

I have never again been able to locate Hokey Avenue and Pokey Street.

Do you suppose there is some meaning to this? They say that all dreams have a meaning.
